A few years ago when the studio was just getting started…when we were just called Inspiration Audio…our team of studio volunteers, IA artists like @mattqofficial and teachers from our friends at RMC Studios came together to really put our studio to the test. The challenge, to faithfully recreate Michael Jackson’s iconic THRILLER.

In addition to RMC Teachers and IA engineers, we also had the great @degzy99 come and lay down drums for the recording! It was such a great time collaborating as musicians and needing out over recording techniques.

The moon is here in Rahway…

We had the pleasure of being invited to join in the kick off for Rahway’s Festival of the moon this past weekend. Artist Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon is the centerpiece for a month-long celebration of the arts in Rahway. They have film, music, art, and dance events all month, all hosted through the @ucpac. If you haven’t yet, go and take a look for yourself. It’s really incredible.

Be sure to also check out the local businesses around town participating in the Moon Festivities too! Like the @coffeeboxrahway who has an “Over the Moon” bubble tea and @wetticketbrewing with their new Moonlight Pizza Pilsner dedicated to @nancys_townehouse_official_

Gear repair day at the studio….

On days off when we don’t have a recording session or something else going on (which is rare) we try to use the time to fix some of the gear in the studio to make sure everything is ready for upcoming sessions.

Yesterday, we decided to finally replace the tubes in our DW Fearn VT-7 Tube Compressor. I had ordered tubes forever ago…but didn’t write down which goes where…a bad move on my part. So as we were repairing it, I was full of doubt not knowing which tube goes where.

Luckily we have a great relationship with Geoff from @dwfearn_hazelriggindustries and he offered for us to bring it over when we weren’t able to problem-solve over the phone. So we went to his workshop and he fixed up the unit so fast and was able to help us get to the root of the issue. He’s the best and we highly recommend anything he makes. So check out their page.

So, long story short the DW is back and ready to be used in the studio! Come check it out.

Any of you guys who know our engineer EJ know that he loves audio gear…almost as much as he loves talking about it. He’s amassed a ton of cool pieces for our studio (both analog and digital) and so we wanted to start sharing a bit about the gear we do have and why we love it.

The Collins 212A is a rare and revered all‐tube, transformer-coupled mixing console from Collins Radio, prized for its exceptionally warm, high-fidelity sound, creamy harmonic richness, and classic vintage character. Featuring multiple tube preamps, program amps, and monitor amps, it offers flexible routing and signal paths that reward live tracking and minimal processing. Perhaps its most famous claim to fame is that @leonbridges’ debut album Coming Home was recorded and mixed almost entirely through a restored 212A console, capturing that soulful, nostalgic, analog vibe.

Special shout out to @thumprecording for the incredible restoration on this piece. It’s perfect.

Also to @carolynmoon888 for giving us incredible music to recording. Her latest single (heard in the video) “Procrastination Station” is out now on all streaming platforms.

Tried something new on the kit the other day - the Cortado MKIII contact mic by Zeppelin Design Labs. It captures drums in a totally different way, straight from the vibrations.

Unlike a traditional overhead or dynamic mic, the Cortado MKIII is a contact microphone, meaning it picks up sound through vibrations instead of air. This gives us a super unique character, almost like you’re hearing the skeleton of the drum kit itself. Contact mics have been around for decades (you’ll often see them used on acoustic instruments like violins, cellos, or even weird percussive objects), but throwing one on a full kit opens up a whole new tonal palette.

I’d like to introduce everyone to Leslie! She is gorgeous to the ears…but not to the eyes right now. We want to give her a good make over but need some help from our Instagram fam.

Does anyone out there have any advice or tips for updating a piece like this? What kinds of products are safe to use? What would be the best way to attack it?

It’s made of solid wood, has some spots that need to be filled, and some water rings from years of what I’m guessing were beer bottles being set on top during a gig.

Also, before the haters come out, we don’t actually want to paint her, but do want to restore her to her former glory. 🤩

Let’s throw a drum set down the stairs…

Yesterday’s session finished with a literal crash. Motherway and EJ had cooked up an idea for one of the songs for their new LP…which was to literally throw a drum set down the stairs and record it!

If you’re new here…hello! We’re Carriage City. A DIY recording studio looking to help local bands make dope records. We’re currently in the process of building our new home in Rahway, NJ, but in the mean time…we’re working with the space we have.

For this session, we were able to pop in and use our new home…which is currently a construction zone. But with packing blankets, some ingenuity, and elbow grease we transformed the space to capture the pure epicness that is @holzli_band. The drums sounded massive and it was the coolest experience. If you’re new here…hello! We’re Carriage City. A DIY recording studio looking to help local bands make dope records. We’re currently in the process of building our new home in Rahway, NJ, but in the mean time…we’re working with the space we have.

For this session, we were able to pop in and use our new home…which is currently a construction zone. But with packing blankets, some ingenuity, and elbow grease we transformed the space to capture the pure epicness that is @holzli_band. The drums sounded massive and it was the coolest experience. We’re so pumped to work more on this projects and for more like it!

Our new home in Rahway is currently under construction…but why not try a pop-up recording session??? Especially with @holzli_band!

Even before we’ve officially taken roots in our new home, the brains behind Carriage City were able to come in for a day to track this album with Holzli. The band really wanted a huge drum sound for this record…and we definitely got that in this space! With packing blankets, duct tape and hope…there is a way!
